I did…*cough cough* “Jonathan Yang”. It’s always weird talking about yourself. I launched the first ever HCON in Clovis, CA at the end of 2017. Long before HCON arrived, however, I started a show in 2016 called “Shareable Hmongments”. Simply put, the show was about me interviewing Hmong professionals and sharing with the world their “Hmongments” (Hmong + moments). In addition to interviewing my guests, I spent hours upon hours learning everything from video and sound editing to building websites with WordPress. Now, learning new things wasn’t as hard as you might think. The hardest part was doing it alone. I suffered from what I call “entrepreneur’s loneliness”. It’s that weird state of wanting to do big and awesome stuff and all your friends and family telling you to be quiet.
One day, however, I pitched my crazy ideas to my college buddy Lewis Chi. To my surprise, he was not phased! Instead, he tagged along. His encouragement turned into investment that turned into HCON 2017! The vision for HCON is simple: to provide a place for young Hmong entrepreneurs to thrive. I would eventually receive leadership, advice, and support from two amazing Hmong entrepreneurs: Annie Lee and Choua Chang of Hmong Women Today. Together in 2017, we launched the first HCON in Clovis, CA!
EVERYONE WILL BE THERE…just kidding. We’re not entirely sure, but the place that we’re renting out can hold 300 people. HCON 2017 brought about 200 people together in Fresno, CA. We’re expecting a larger crowd since Minnesota has been super supportive of HCON since the beginning.
Yes! HCON is for anyone willing to learn new things. We do not assume that our audience has any coding, technical, digital marketing, or business background.
Anyone who wants to learn how to utilize the internet, social media, and content creation to increase their online presence or to start something new. Students, working professionals, and entrepreneurs will benefit from attending.
Do you want to learn how to make awesome online videos? HCON 2018 is for you!
Do you want to learn how to create an interesting Facebook page with over 10,000 likes? HCON 2018 is for you!
I can go on, but hopefully you get the point: HCON 2018 is for anyone who wants to utilize the digital world for their personal or professional brand.
That’s a great question! The HND (Hmong National Development) Conference is an amazing event that brings together the Hmong community in an inclusive and well-rounded way: promoting higher education, professional development, and the Hmong culture. But HCON is not that wide reaching. HCON has a very simple goal: to build momentum in the Hmong community by investing in entrepreneurial leadership. So HCON is NOT about higher education, the Hmong culture, or professional development per se. We might touch on these topics, but we want to build a new generation of Hmong entrepreneurs that utilize today’s technology to solve meaningful problems.
